Why this matters
Bamboo Does Not Stay Where You Planted It
Running bamboo spreads by rhizome, and in the Queensland climate it moves fast. What went in as a screen along one boundary ends up through the neighbour’s yard, under the driveway, into the septic trenches and up through the middle of the lawn.
It is also close to impossible to knock over by halves. Cut the canes and it shoots again within weeks. Spray the tops and the rhizome mass sits there unharmed. Every partial attempt buys a few months and leaves the underground network exactly as strong as it was.
What we do
Take the Rhizome or Do Not Bother
We mulch the standing canes down first, which clears the stand and lets us actually see the ground. Then we excavate the rhizome mat itself — the dense underground network the whole plant runs from — rather than leaving it in place to reshoot.
On big infestations the rhizomes can run several metres past the visible clump and well under fences, paths and services. We chase the mat out to its edges where we can safely get to it, and tell you honestly where it runs under something we cannot lift.

We work out how far the rhizome network actually runs, which is almost always well past where the canes are standing, and check what it is running under.

We excavate the rhizome mat
The underground mass is dug out rather than cut off. That is the part that decides whether the bamboo is genuinely gone or just knocked back for a season.

Good Questions — Here's What to Know
Will the bamboo grow back after you remove it?
Not from the mat we take out. Where rhizomes run under a slab, a fence footing or a boundary we cannot excavate, some shoots can come back from what is left, and we will tell you up front if that applies to your site. Anywhere we can get the machine to, it is gone.
Can you remove bamboo growing along a fence line?
Usually yes, though it depends on how close the rhizomes have run to the footings and whether the fence has to come out temporarily to do the job properly. We will tell you which it is when we look at it.
Is it cheaper to just cut it down and poison it?
On paper, yes. In practice it rarely finishes the job on an established stand, and people usually end up paying for excavation eventually anyway. Herbicide can be a reasonable follow-up for stragglers, but on its own it seldom clears a mature clump.
How much ground gets disturbed?
Rhizome removal is excavation, so the ground within the stand and a margin around it will be turned over. We backfill and level as we go, but do expect the area to need reseeding or replanting afterwards.
