Why this matters

Lantana Quietly Takes the Back Property

Lantana is a declared weed and one of the most persistent problems on Queensland properties. It gets going in gullies, creek flats and timbered country where nobody goes, and by the time it is noticed it is a thicket that stock cannot get through and you cannot walk into.

The damage runs deeper than lost grazing. Lantana shades out native understorey, carries fire well when it dries off, harbours pest animals, and is toxic to cattle. It is also very hard to knock over by hand once a thicket is properly established.

What we do

Thickets Down to Ground in One Pass

We mulch lantana out at ground level with a forestry mulcher, taking the whole thicket down and spreading it as a mulch layer across the ground. What was an impenetrable wall becomes open, walkable country in a single pass, with nothing left to burn or cart out.

The mulcher will work into gullies, along creek flats and through timbered country where a slasher simply cannot get, and it will do it while leaving the standing trees you want to keep. It also handles the steeper ground that a lot of the worst infestations sit on.

How the job runs

Open Country Back in a Day

Mulching is the fastest way to get on top of a thicket. Follow-up is what keeps it that way.

  1. We map the infestation

We work out how far the lantana actually runs, including through gullies and timber where it is easy to underestimate, and how steep the country is.

  2. We mulch it to ground

The thicket is mulched at ground level and spread as an even layer. Standing trees you want kept stay where they are.

  3. We talk about follow-up

Lantana comes back from seed and root, so we will be straight with you about what regrowth to expect and when a follow-up pass or spray program makes sense.

The cost of waiting

A Thicket Doubles While You Wait

Leaving lantana to run, or trying to clear it by hand, usually leads to:

  • Grazing country steadily lost as the thicket spreads out from gullies and creek flats
  • Serious fuel loads building in exactly the country that is hardest to defend in a fire
  • Toxicity risk to cattle and a haven for pest animals through the middle of the property
  • Obligations under declared weed provisions going unmet on your land

Good Questions — Here's What to Know

Will lantana grow back after mulching?

Some will. Mulching takes the thicket out and gives you your country back immediately, but lantana reshoots from the crown and from a long-lived seed bank. The realistic plan is mulching to reset it, then follow-up spraying or a second pass on the regrowth while it is still small and cheap to deal with.

Can you get into gullies and steep country?

That is exactly where the mulcher earns its keep. Tracked machines handle slopes and broken ground that a slasher or tractor cannot safely work, and gullies are usually where the worst of the infestation is sitting.

Do you spray as well as mulch?

Our side of it is the mechanical clearing. Plenty of clients pair that with a spray program on the regrowth, and we are happy to time our work around a spray contractor so the two actually complement each other.

Is lantana removal something I am legally required to do?

Lantana is a restricted invasive plant in Queensland and landholders have a general biosecurity obligation to take reasonable steps to limit its spread. What that means in practice depends on your property and local council — worth a call to them if you are unsure.
